What is EMI & EMC?

When it comes to regulatory testing of electronic components and consumer products, the terms electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) are often used interchangeably. Because they are related in many ways, it is easy to confuse the two.

Electromagnetic Interference (Electromagnetic Interference abbreviated as EMI), literally translated is electromagnetic interference. This is a compound word, we should consider "electromagnetic" and "interference" separately. Refers to the interference phenomenon caused by the action of electromagnetic waves and electronic components. There are two types of conduction interference and radiation interference. Conducted interference refers to the coupling (interference) of signals on one electrical network to another electrical network through a conductive medium. Radiation interference means that the interference source couples its signal (interference) to another electrical network through space. In high-speed PCB and system design, high-frequency signal lines, integrated circuit pins, various connectors, etc. may become antennas. The characteristic radiation interference source can emit electromagnetic waves and affect the normal operation of other systems or other subsystems in this system.

The literal translation of emc (electro magnetic compatibility) is "electromagnetic compatibility". It means that the electromagnetic energy generated by the equipment does not interfere with other equipment, nor is it the ability to not interfere with the electromagnetic energy of other equipment. Electromagnetic energy detection, anti-electromagnetic interference test, statistical processing of detection results, electromagnetic energy radiation suppression technology, natural electromagnetic phenomena such as lightning and geomagnetism, the influence of electric and magnetic fields on the human body, the international standard of electric field strength, the transmission path of electromagnetic energy, Relevant standards and restrictions are included in emc.
